SoCal Gas Presents…..
“Natural Gas: Part of the Solution”
Essay Contest
You can rely on natural gas to be there for you when you need it. Over 25% of consumers in the United States use it as the primary fuel for heating their homes, water, cooking and doing laundry. But we can use it in other ways too.
Natural gas has unique properties or characteristics. First, it is a gas (not a liquid or a solid). Second, it is lighter than air (a balloon filled with natural gas would float away). Next, it is naturally colorless (you can’t see it), odorless (you can’t smell it, but a scent is added for safety) and it is combustible (it burns). With the right mixture of oxygen, natural gas burns with a bright blue flame providing energy. When compared to other fuels that are used to produce energy, such as coal or oil, natural gas burns the hottest, the brightest and the cleanest! So it’s the ideal source of energy to use in our homes. Natural gas is also a highly affordable energy source, thanks to its natural abundance and efficient delivery methods.
In 1,000 words or less, can you share other ways that natural gas is being used and how using it can benefit the environment?
