The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has developed Protect Your Climate to provide climate protection education materials to Bay Area students. The curriculum was successfully piloted in 13 classrooms last school year. Teachers not participating in the program are still welcomed to download the curriculum from their website and use it in their classrooms.
Protect Your Climate contains 16 lessons that investigate the science and causes of climate change and how to take action to protect our climate. Through hands-on activities students explore air quality, energy, waste, and transportation issues related to climate change. In addition, the lessons are connected with California State Content Standards.
The curriculum is organized into the following four sections:
Climate Change Basics: Students learn the key scientific principles around air pollution and climate change.
Reducing Impacts from Energy Use: Students discover how energy, and specifically electricity use, is connected to climate change,; and examine renewable energy sources and ways to conserve electricity.
Reducing Impacts from Waste: Students track their own waste habitats at school and calculate the benefits of recycling and composting.
Reducing Impacts from Transportation: Students learn how transportation contributes to climate change and explore ways to drive less and avoid emissions from transportation uses.
