MEEC Program Specialist Positon Announcement

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT for MEEC PROGRAM SPECIALIST

for the Mojave Environmental Education Consortium (MEEC), the High Desert Zone of the California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network, Region 10. MEEC Mission Statement: To improve the environmental literacy of students, teachers and communities of the Mojave Desert region by actively providing educational resources.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $21.00 per hour; Paid Vacation, Holidays, Sick Leave (no health
benefits)

MEEC – a non-profit organization that links educators with environmental education resources in the High Desert and the Antelope Valley – is recruiting for a Program Specialist. The successful candidate will serve as the organization’s fundraiser, recruit program sponsors and coordinate and promote MEEC’s events and services, including teacher workshops, contests and grant programs. Applicants must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office 2000 & Excel and have
some desktop publishing knowledge. Public speaking/presentation skills are essential, as is the ability to write newsletter articles and create publications. Grant writing knowledge a plus. Occasional evenings and weekends required. Travel throughout the High Desert portion of San Bernardino County, Riverside County’s Palo Verde Valley and the Antelope Valley will be occasionally required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities outlined above is: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required for performing the Program Specialist position. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications is to possess any combination equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by college-level courses in public relations, marketing, communications, and education or a closely-related discipline, and/or increasingly related work experience. Knowledge of current environmental issues a plus. Ability to recruit sponsors and
fundraise. Familiarity with grant writing procedures a plus. Skill to operate an office computer and a variety of word processing and software applications. Ability to create publications, newsletter articles, programs and outreach displays aimed at promoting MEEC’s services to teachers and soliciting sponsors. Public speaking and writing experience required. Ability to organize and prioritize work; be a self-starter; understand and follow oral and written instructions; deal tactfully and courteously with the public in person and by telephone; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a full-time contract position which is renewable on an annual basis. The position is funded through MEEC and reports to the organization’s Executive Board. The position is based at the Mojave Desert AQMD in Victorville, CA.

THE EXAMINATION: Applications will be competitively evaluated. Selected candidates may be invited to an oral interview and written exam.

MEDICAL EXAMINATON: Conditional offers of employment are made with the understanding that candidates may be required to pass a medical examination. Failure to meet medical standards may result in termination or withdrawal of appointment prior to completion of organization’s medical examinations.

IMMIGRATION LAW: At the time of hire, MEEC employees must meet the documentation requirements of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Class “C” driver’s license is required.
