Presenting the first essay contest of 2014! Sponsored by Southern California Edison, the essay title is: “Renew” My Home.

Can the sun power your TV or make microwave popcorn? It can, if you are using renewable energy to power your home! More than 20% of our energy already comes from renewable resources like wind, solar and hydro. Renewable energy is made from resources that the earth will replace, like wind, water and sunshine. A home can use solar technology to generate electricity from the sun to power lighting, appliances, computers and other items we have become accustomed to using. Many homes have switched to using renewable energy from the sun and wind to produce electricity. Renewable energy is cleaner for the environment. It produces no emissions and results in cleaner air for all!
In 250 words or less, can you write about three ways that using renewable energy at home can benefit your family and the environment?

There are FIVE prize categories
Kindergarten: Can draw a picture with 2-3 sentences about the concept
Elementary School (grades 1-2) Middle School (grades 6-8)
Elementary School (grades 3-5) High School (grades 9-12)

First, second, and third place winners will be awarded in each category. Winners will receive a gift card for the following amounts: First place winners will receive $50, second place $25, and third place will receive $15. Kindergarten winners will receive a $10 gift card for all places instead of the above prizes.

Contest Criteria:
Essays should be no more than 250 words in length.
EACH ESSAY MUST CONTAIN THE AUTHOR’S GRADE, SCHOOL AND HOME PHONE NUMBER TO BE CONSIDERED.
Deadline for submission is February 7, 2014 at 5:00 PM.

Winners will be notified by phone and invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at 5:00 PM on February 25, 2014 at the Mojave Desert AQMD Office located at 14306 Park Ave, Victorville
