Biomimicry Poster Contest!

What is biomimicry? Biomimicry is the concept of seeking sustainable solutions to human challenges by imitating nature’s time tested strategies. “Bio” = life and “mimic” = imitate. Putting the words together we get imitating life, or more specifically, emulating biological functions and behaviors found in the natural world to solve social, environmental, and technological challenges. Nature offers some of the best ideas –because it has been perfecting its designs in the face of change for billions of years! A few examples of biomimicry found in every day life include:

  • Airplane wings inspired by bird’s wings
  • Solar panels inspired by photosynthetic capabilities of plant leaves
  • High-speed bullet trains inspired by the Kingfisher bird’s beak
  • Drag-reducing, racing swimsuits inspired by shark skin

Let’s learn about biomimicry!

Research an example of biomimicry. Create a poster to showcase the nature-inspired design. Explain why it is an example of biomimicry and why it interests you.
