2018 “Geology of the Mojave” Teacher Workshop Scholarships

20161029_120802

The two-day “Geology of the Mojave” teacher workshop has been developed to aid teachers in understanding the unique geological evolution and diversity that the Mojave Desert region has to offer.  Teachers will be experiencing place-based learning throughout the Mojave National Preserve and neighboring locations in the Mojave Desert. Utilizing these unique environments, participants will learn about the geological process that has shaped the Mojave Desert landscape into what we know today.   This workshop will demonstrate to teachers the basic geological processes and provide a timeline as to when they occurred.  Covering the topics of erosion, weathering, fault lines, and volcanic activity, teachers will be able to share with their students examples of how these occurred and shaped the landscape they are familiar with in the High Desert.

We are pleased to be working with Dr. David Miller. Dr. Miller is a Research Geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA. After obtaining a Ph.D. in geology at UCLA, Dave has mapped and studied bedrock geology in northern Utah and the Mojave Desert, publishing numerous geologic maps and related articles. Over the last 20 years, he shifted his expertise to Quaternary geology, focusing mainly on the Mojave Desert, and publishing surficial geologic maps, maps on earthquake fault hazards, and studies showing the linkages among surface deposits, plant communities, and surface hydrology. Dave is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and was awarded the Department of Interior’s Meritorious Service Award.

The workshop will be conducted throughout the Mojave National Preserve and surrounding areas.  Lengths of drive-time between stops will vary.  Overnight accommodations will be provided by MEEC at the Aquarius Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, NV.

10 Teacher Scholarships will be awarded to attend the two-day training session.  Scholarships include all meals, lodging and curriculum materials. Transportation during the workshop will be provided by MEEC. Storage space in vehicles is limited and attendees will be allowed one (1) small bag.  Sorry, no spouses or partners may accompany the workshop attendee due to limited arrangements.

A $50 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT will be required for all scholarship recipients upon acceptance of application to confirm your attendance at this workshop.  Your check will be returned to you upon check in on February 3, 2018.

Applicants will be reviewed on a first come basis.  Priority will be given to first time attendees.
